Celebrities who died too soon : There’s some that might say that death is one of the occupational hazards of being an artist. True enough, there have been many great artists and musicians over the course of history that have left this world well before their time.

Here, you’ll find a list of some of the most important artists who died well before we were all ready to say goodbye to them.

1. Jim Morrison. The lead singer of The Doors was many things over the course of his life, a rock superstar, a sex idol and a reputed drug addict. Although it’s hard to question his artistic skill given the number of his songs that still ride the airwaves today, the choices that he made in his personal life aren’t anything if not questionable. He died in Paris, where he remains buried, at the age of 27 of a heroine overdose.

2. John Keats. You may not remember this old soul until you dust off your memories of High School English class. But, John Keats is widely considered to be one of the greatest English poets who ever lived. He also happened to die at a young age, and labored over his craft knowing that he was going to die at a young age. That’s part of what makes his legacy all the more remarkable. He died at the age of 25 in 1821.

3. Chris Farley. Even if you’re not old enough to remember Farley’s heyday on Saturday Night Live, you’re no doubt familiar with many of the iconic characters that he brought to the show. There’s also the slew of movies that he released, none more universally loved than Tommy Boy, which was released in 1995. Unfortunately for us all, Farley battled and ultimately lost to his personal demons, passing away at the age of 33 in 1997.

4. Sid Vicious. In the history of Rock and Roll, there has perhaps been no other person that embodied the spirit of Rock and Roll quite like Sid Vicious. As the bass player (which is generous, considering his skills on the instrument) for the iconic British punk band The Sex Pistols, he captured the world’s imagination. He passed away in 1979 at the age of 21 in an apparent suicide with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Their relationship is immortalized in the film Sid & Nancy, starring Gary Oldman.

5. Kurt Cobain. Kurt Cobain was the singer for the iconic Grunge band Nirvana, which hailed from Seattle. Although his artistic career was short lived, the music that he and his band created still lives in the public consciousness to this day, and its influence can be traced to many of the most popular bands of the 21st century. That’s why it was so unfortunate that he chose to end his own life at the age of 27, when he put a shotgun in his own mouth on April 5, 1994.

6. Marvin Gaye. The voice of Marvin Gaye, which is immortalized on the many hit records that he released during his lifetime, is a national treasure. Some may know him for “Sexual Healing”, while others may know him for “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” or “Let’s Get It On”. Even as he moved into middle age, it still seemed like he had so much more to offer the world. That’s why it was such a shock when his own father shot him to death in 1984. He died at the age of 44.

7. Jimi Hendrix. Has there ever been a greater guitar player than Jimmy Hendrix? While some may argue that others might possess greater technical skill, few would argue that there’s any guitar player that can rival the primal power with which Hendrix attack his instrument. Like many other musicians before him and since though, Hendrix struggled with his addictions, and they eventually cost him his life at the age of 27 in 1970.

8. Tupac Shakur. As the 90s turned the page into their later half, it seemed like Tupac Shakur had secured his spot as one of the leading voices in hip-hip worldwide. That’s why it was such a senseless tragedy was he was gunned down at the age of 25 while in Las Vegas. The identities of those who murdered him and their motives remain a mystery to this day, with some even speculating (against all reason) that Tupac may still be alive.

9. Ritchie Valens. Richard Valenzuela, who went by the stage name of Ritchie Valens, was one of the progenitors of rock and roll music as we know it today. Even if you’ve never heard his name before, it’s impossible that you’ve never heard his hit song “La Bamba”. He died at the age of 17 in a tragic plane crash that also claimed the lives of early rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. The tragic event is immortalized in Don McLean’s famous song “American Pie”.

10. Sam Cooke. There are singer-songwriters and then there’s Sam Cooke. He is one of the few musicians who truly earns the designation of being ahead of his or her time, and he’s famously known for such hits as “Chain Gang” and “Twistin’ the Night Away”. The details surrounding Cooke’s death remain disputed to this day, although the official account holds that a hotel operator fatally shot him in self defense.

11. Janis Joplin, The 60s weren’t just for young, upstart male musicians; they were also for female musicians too. And, there was perhaps no 60s female musician greater than the late Janis Joplin, who’s known for hits like “Piece of my Heart”. Her unique singing style continues to capture minds to this day, which is why it’s such a shame that her life ended tragically at the age of 27 when she overdosed on heroine.

12. Otis Redding. Otis Redding is widely regarded as one of the greatest R&B singers of all time, and many around the globe still enjoy unwinding to perhaps his greatest hit “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”. When he recorded that song in 1967, Redding was on the verge of remaking his entire sound. That’s why many still rue the plane crash near Madison, Wisconsin, which claimed his life at the age of 26 that very same year.

13. Biggie Smalls. Christopher Wallace, also known as Biggie Smalls or the Notorious B.I.G., was perhaps the biggest name in East Coast rap during the 90s. Following the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996, the tension between the East Coast and West Coast rap scenes was at a fever pitch. Although, like Tupac’s murder, Biggie Small’s murder remains unsolved, many consider it to have been an act of retaliation, one that sadly robbed the world of the second of two of hip-hop’s greatest voices in two years.

14. Aaliyah. When Aaliyah died at the age of 22 in a plane crash in The Bahamas, it was a tragedy that was felt nationally. Young though she was, she had begun to top charts with her signature singing style, and she had even begun to star in Hollywood movies such as Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned. At the time of her death, it seemed as if she was poised to snatch the kind of stardom that pop queen Beyoncé enjoys today. Sadly, we’ll never know what she might have done with it.

15. Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe, who was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, is perhaps the most iconic American figure of the 20th century. Not only was she a star on the silver screen, she was also the wife of famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio and later the famous playwright Arthur Miller. Although her death at the age of 36 is classified as a probable suicide, there are still those that believe she was deliberately poisoned, with shadowy figures like the CIA or the mafia being possible culprits.
