Air Peace and Nigerian Air Force planes have arrived in Sudan to evacuate Nigerian students from the country, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
The students had fled from Sudan and were waiting to depart from Aswan Airport to Abuja after being moved from the Sudanese side to the Egyptian side of the Arqeel students across the border.
The commission shared a video of the students being prepared for departure and said that the necessary documentation was being completed.
In a tweet on Tuesday, the commission stated, “Evacuation Update: Nigerian Ambassador in Egypt has successfully moved evacuees from the Sudanese side to the Egyptian side of the Arqeel students across the border. The students are now being prepared for their departure to Abuja through Aswan Airport… With the arrival of AirPeace and the NAF Plane, the onward journey home begins soon after the necessary documentation.”
Recall that Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), announced on Monday that Egypt has finally opened its border for Nigerian students evacuated from Sudan.
Dabiri-Erewa said the border was opened after President Muhammadu Buhari spoke with Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the Egyptian president.
The NIDCOM chairperson’s statement came a few hours after the commission said Egypt’s borders were still closed despite the arrival of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the northern African country to airlift the stranded students.
NIDCOM said the air force had assured the students that they will not be left behind.
