Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1.The Department of State Services on Tuesday presented a video evidence at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Lugbe. In the video, a business mogul, Mr Femi Otedola, was seen giving out two ‘parcels’ to a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Farouq Lawan.
2. A security analyst and counter-terrorism expert, David Otto, has revealed that Switzerland representative played an active role in organising negotiations from within Nigeria and outside Nigeria along with Nigerians like Barrister Zannah Mustapha and human rights activist and lawyer, Asiha Wakil who wield trust due to their closness to the insurgents.
3. The estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe, Lanre Gentry, was on Tuesday sent to Kirikiri Prison in Lagos. This followed his arraignment before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for alleged battering of Aigbe. He was unable to meet his bail conditions.
4. President Muhammadu Buhari has allegedly ordered the resignation of the former Governor of Rivers State who is now the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi. Also alleged to have been asked to resign are Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Chief of Staff to the president, Abba Kyari over various allegations of corruption.
5. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that cut-off points are not set by the body. He explained that a policy committee chaired by the Minister of Education with the Board, Vice-Chancellors, Provost of Education and Polytechnic Rectors, is saddled with the task. The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said this at a news briefing with newsmen on Tuesday in Bwari, in preparations for the conduct of this year’s UTME.
6. What would have generated into another controversy on Tuesday over Buhari’s letter to the National Assembly where he said Osinbajo would coordinate the affairs of the country while he is away on medical vacation was averted after the Senate President, Bukola Saraki intervened on the floor of the house, stating that the letter sent to the Senate automatically means that power has already been transmitted to the Vice President.
7. Leaders of Chibok community, under the aegis of Kibaku Area Development Association, have condemned the decision of Boko Haram negotiators for failing to force some of the abducted schoolgirls to join the group of 82 girls freed at the weekend. The Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Hosea Tsambido, told reporters the attitude of the Federal Government was not only suspicious. He said the target was to give excuses if the remaining girls are not released.
8. The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign state of Biafra, MASSOB, has claimed, that some of the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have concluded plans to deny Igbo from getting registered in the ongoing voters registration exercise, saying the group will consequently not support any conduct of election in south eastern part of the country in 2019.
9. Former Special Assistant to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, says President Muhammadu Buhari labelled Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, ‘Coordinator of National Affairs’ because the latter “outshined” Buhari last time he travelled to London on medical vacation.
10. In sports, Juventus defeated Monaco 2-1 in Turin on Tuesday night, to qualify for the final of this year’s Champions League on a 4-1 aggregate. Mario Mandzukic and Dani Alves scored for Juventus and they will face Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the final.
