Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has denied reports that he was detained at a UK airport. Obi clarified that he was only subjected to a routine immigration check.
The former governor of Anambra State was reportedly held for several hours at Heathrow Airport in London by immigration officials. However, Obi, speaking in an interview with Arise TV on Monday night, maintained that he was not arrested and the immigration check lasted for less than 20 minutes.
Obi explained that he was stopped for the check because it appeared that his identity had been duplicated by someone. He also disclosed that he received VIP treatment during the process.
The presidential candidate stressed that he was never arrested and was treated with respect.
He further clarified that he underwent a routine immigration check and was not detained, as was earlier reported.
Obi said, “I was stopped for a routine immigration check in the UK because it appears that my identity was duplicated by someone. I was never arrested. I was treated with due respect and walked through the VIP process. Everything lasted less than 20 minutes.”
