See Lagos school surrounded by snakes – Lagos state is the commercial capital of Nigeria, hence the plan by the state government to make it a mega city before the year 2020. The immediate past governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola, enshrined his slogan Eko o ni baje (meaning: Lagos will not be destroyed) in the hearts of Lagosians and it became more like an anthem afterwards.

His successor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who has stayed in power for just over a year continued from where his predecessor stopped, stating emphatically that Itesiwaju Ilu Eko lo je wa logun (meaning: we are more concerned about the progress of Lagos state).
These slogans, however, seem to be mere cliches and have not been followed up by actions (at least not to the latter) as our correspondent has gathered.
A visit to Ajeromi Primary School, Ijora Badia, a part of Lagos Mainland which leads to the Island, showed just how impoverished some citizens of the state are.
The school which is situated in one of the demolished communities consists of about four blocks of classrooms with different indications that developmental projects were being carried out to rehabilitate the students studying there over the years.
But the schools looked dilapidated and abandoned despite the fact that it still habited students as recently as last week (10-14 October, 2016) before the students were relocated to another school within the same area.
The roofs were looking tattered, the walls broken, the environment unkempt and bushes around also suggested to first-timers (like our crew) or visitors that the school had not been put to use in a really long while, a situation which parents stated was not the case.
According to the residents of the area, the students’ relocation had nothing to do with the state of the facilities on ground at the premises, but the fact that the area had become too flooded for them to have thoroughfare to and from their place of learning.
In a brief chat with our correspondent, Chief Mrs Oluwatoyin Abiye Oshindele, the Iyalode of Iganmu, stated that there had been series of issues with the school and its environs in recent past, without any help coming their ways.
According to her: “I was even in the school recently when a student fell down in a pool of water right in front of the premises and in an attempt to rescue the child, I also found myself in the pool of water with him.
“It took the intervention of people around to rescue us from the incident.
“But the child kept crying, majorly because the mother bought the book for her on credit and the damage that had been done to it in the course of the incident. That’s to show you the extent of damage that has been done to the innocent students who have been studying under this kind of shabby atmosphere.
“We have written series of letters to the government to come to our aide, but it seems everything has always fallen on deaf ears. We hope that with your report, respite can be brought to our community.”
Asked whether the buildings were actually schools, a parent simply identified as Primate Ikueminu, answered in the affirmative, stating that they were already tired of writing letters to government officials in Alausa, Ikeja (the state capital) over the anomalies in their area.
He informed our crew also that the community members are the ones who pay people to clear the grasses close to the school, but that they do not have money presently to carry on with their usual practice.
“I have about four children in this school. Even the children of some of my relations are here, but we don’t have what it takes to ensure the school is better than this,” he began.
Is the children safe with the bushy area surrounding them? Primate said: “It’s not safe o because there are a lot of things hiding under the grass as you are looking at it.
“Snake is under this bushy area. It is the community members that contribute money to clear the bush as buoyant as we are, but we need help from the government. “We really need help in this place, we need the government to come and help us.”
