Afrobeats star Seun Kuti, who is currently in detention at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, reportedly faces a challenging time behind bars.
According to Vanguard, Seun has been crowned the “General Overseer” by fellow inmates after being remanded by a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court.Upon being taken to the cell, Seun’s first surprise was being ordered to stand by the leader of the inmates, who possessed a deep, hoarse voice.
However, he was subsequently rejected by the other inmates who demanded that he be removed from the cell, banging on their metal protective door. The attention from the police guards remained limited.
In an attempt to gain acceptance, Seun negotiated with the inmates and called his wife to bring N25,000, which he handed over to the leader. Once the money was exchanged, the inmates accepted him and allocated him a place to sit.
This incident left Seun Kuti infuriated, leading him to embark on a hunger strike and reject food brought by his wife. He eventually resumed eating after a day and a half.
Reportedly, Seun Kuti has now been crowned the General Overseer of the cell, and a Bible has been given to him. According to the publication, he leads prayer sessions for the inmates whenever needed, and they all chant “GO, GO” afterwards.
During a visit by a journalist to Panti, Seun was seen tightly clutching the Bible with his left hand as he climbed the stairs to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara. He was later led back down the stairs into the cell.
