Live Updates Nigeria chooses Governors – The governorship and State House of Assembly elections in Nigeria were held on April 11, 2015, Saturday. Nigerians stormed various polling units across the country to choose governors and state lawmakers who would represent and rule them for the next four years. However, there was a low turnout of voters in some state as voters chose to remain indoors.

14:15 The INEC has announced that House of Assembly election in parts of Ilaje, Ugbo and other parts of Ondo state, where polls were disrupted, has been cancelled (The Punch).
13:50 Reports reaching us inform that an angry mob has burnt down the palace of the Emir of Kashere Town in Gombe state. A source in the town who declined to be named for security reasons said the palace was burnt down by irate mob who suspected that three missing ballot boxes were kept there (PT).
13:30 The INEC has released an interim report on the conduct of the governorship and state legislative elections across Nigeria. The comission stated that its “general assessment shows that the elections went very well across the country.” However, it acknowledged that based on its findings, the elections were marred by violence in some parts of the country (@inecnigeria).
13:00 Protests break out in Akwa Ibom State as residents call for total cancellation of poll results. Airport closed (@TVCNigeria).
12:45 The INEC starts the official announcement of the results of the April 11 elections in Nigeria.
12:30 The INEC has postponed the House of Assembly election in Ekwusigo Constituency in Anambra state, fixed April 25 for the rescheduled poll (Channels).
12:15 A PDP councillor, Lawan Manya, has been arrested in the northern Nigerian state of Jigawa over the killing of one Sani Garba, an APC supporter. The killing happened in Garki local council area when the councillor with his two accomplices stabbed the deceased to death on the eve of the governorship election in the state.
11:50 When every Nigerian is waiting for the official election results, the INEC has announced that results are already arriving for final collation.

11:35 The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idowu, explained the process of collating the results and maintained that this cannot be truncated.
According to him, results from each Polling Unit will first be collated at the ward level and then sent to the Local Government level. This means that the Local Government would collate the results from all its wards. The final stop would be the state capital where all results from the LGs will be collated and must be confirmed to have tallied. Only then can the result be made public (Channels).
11:15 While counting of votes is still ongoing, Inter-Party Advisory Council has urged contestants in the governorship election to emulate President Goodluck Jonathan’s spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated after the announcement of March 28 presidential election result (Leadership).
10:55 The Centre for Democracy and Development has released its preliminary report on governorship, state assemblies elections. The CDD deployed its observers and reporters in 21 states in order to assess the quality of the electoral process and informing the NEC Citizens’ Reporting Centre as well as the general public of cases of irregularity and logistical/technical problems (PT).

10:10 Some hoodlums at Iwere-Ile in Iwajowa Local government attacked the collation officer, Dr. Dickson Ajayi and destroyed election materials. This information was disclosed during the presentation of results of the election to the state chief collation officer at the INEC office in Ibadan (Vanguard).
9:55 Voting has been extended into Sunday, April 12, in Rivers state after irregularities at some polling stations. The extension affects nine wards in southern Rivers, said the state’s top electoral officer Gesila Khan. She added that in some instances key election materials were never brought to polling stations. The results from Saturday’s election have been cancelled in other parts of the state after ballot papers were openly stolen (Vanguard).

Chief Obasanjo explained that the success recorded so far in the 2015 general elections, despite initial reservations and challenges over the process, is an indication that Nigeria’s democracy has matured (Cnannels).

8:10 No fewer than 21 people were killed during the governorship and State House of Assembly elections (six deaths in Rivers, five each in Akwa Ibom and Kebbi, three in Imo, two in Cross River, and one each in Plateau and Bauchi states). Scores of other people were either wounded in attacks by thugs, or intimidated by them (The Nation).
8:00 The collation will soon start in Lagos, form all indications. But one hurdle still has to be scaled – that of finding an arrangement that can accommodate the process. The initial arrangement is now useless because the compound is water logged and the canopies were leaking (PT).
