Venus Williams
Sjogren’s Syndrome. After experiencing unexplained fatigue, Williams was forced to drop out of the US Open in 2011. “I had swelling, numbness, and fatigue. You just feel beat up. The good news for me is now I know what’s happening.” Williams told Good Morning America that she was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune syndrome that is incurable, but that can be managed with lifestyle habits and medical therapies.
What is Sjogren’s Syndrome? Sjogren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the white blood cells attack moisture-secreting glands. Sjogren’s most commonly causes dryness of the eyes and mouth, joint pain, and fatigue, but can also cause organ dysfunction in the kidneys, gastrointestinal system, blood vessels, lungs, liver, pancreas, and the central nervous system. Individuals living with Sjogren’s are also more likely to develop lymphoma.
