The total revenue of CA Technologies was $4.643 billion, out of which $4.2 billion came from software related business. This NASDAQ-listed company offers management software and solutions. It is one of the largest independent software corporations in the world.

8) VMware (VMW) – $4.8 billion

US software company VMware’s software stream revenues for 2013 were $4.8 billion, out of total revenues of $5.2 billion. The company is owned by EMC. But these two companies are listed as separate entities on NYSE.

7) Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) – $4.9 billion

Global giant Hewlett-Packard generated a total revenue was $112.298 billion; it earned only $4.9 billion from software. Popularly known as HP, this conglomerate is mainly known for its printing products and solutions.

The total revenue of EMC was $23.2 billion, out of which $5.6 billion was from software related business. This NYSE-listed company also owns VMware.

5) Symantec (SYMC) – $6.4 billion

Symantec is the global leader in software security solutions. This NASDAQ-listed company’s total revenue was $6.9 billion, out of which $6.4 billion came from software.

4) SAP (SAP) – $18.9 billion

Germany-based company SAP generated $18.9 billion in revenue from its software stream. The total revenue of the multinational was $22.87 billion. Around 83 percent of its revenues come from software. 3) International Business Machines (IBM) – $24.1 billion

Popular worldwide as IBM, this global technology and consulting conglomerate earned revenue of $99.75 billion, out of which $24.1 billion was from software. IBM has been consistently deriving 25 to 30 percent of revenue from software. It manufactures and markets computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

2) Oracle (ORCL) – $29.7 billion

Oracle overtook IBM in 2013 to gain the second position in software revenues. This American multinational computer technology corporation’s software revenues were $29.7 billion, out of the total revenue of $34.74 billion. Currently the company is focused on engineering hardware and software to work together in the cloud and in its clients’ date center.

1) Microsoft (MSFT) – $65.7 billion

The total revenue of Microsoft was $77.85 billion, out of which $65.7 billion was from software, which is around 84 percent! As we can see, the behemoth’s software revenue exceeds those of the companies in the second and the third position! This American multinational corporation develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics, and personal computers and services.
