When a famous person gets married, it often makes national news—the same is true when celebrities decide to end their marriages. Some famous people have made divorce look easy, and haven’t resorted to trash-talking each other in the media (good work Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons), but some celebrities are far less than gracious when it comes to sharing their feelings about an ex-spouse (we’re looking at you, Alec Baldwin). Divorce can be a difficult process in and of itself. When you throw fame, millions of dollars and a very nosey public into the mix, things can get downright crazy. Some celebrities even go through divorce proceedings that were longer than their actual marriage! Here are 12 celebs who went through hell to get a divorce. 12. Kim Basinger Actress Kim Basinger was once the love of Alec Baldwin’s life, and the two were one of the best looking pairs on the red carpet in the 1990s. They met on the set of The Marrying Man in 1991, and fell for each other pretty quickly. Basinger and Baldwin also welcomed a daughter named Ireland in 1995. A short time later, the marriage started to go downhill. There were rumors that Alec had a temper, and that Kim’s mental health wasn’t always very stable. When they decided to divorce, they entered into a custody battle that literally lasted for years. We’re sure you remember the unpleasant voicemail Alec left for his daughter during the custody and divorce proceedings. We haven’t heard much from Basinger lately, but Alec seems to have moved on to new love and is much less of a maniac these days. He even said that his ex-wife was “one the most beautiful women who ever lived” and that getting a divorce doesn’t “muddy his view of that.” That’s the least he can say after all the emotional turmoil he caused. Cuoco was also in the news for her whirlwind romance with Ryan Sweeting. The two got married after knowing each other for just a couple of months, but in 2015, Cuoco confirmed that they are divorcing. Apparently, the process has been pretty tough, and sources say the reason for the split had a lot to do with money. That is, Sweeting was sitting around the house all day while Cuoco made the money. That’s usually not a good situation. It looks like the divorce is still “on”, but we already see more difficulty for Kaley as Ryan tries to see how much he can get in spousal support. 10. Gwen Stefani By now, we’ve all heard singer and No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani and her rocker husband Gavin Rossdale, are calling it quits. Some say that Gwen wanted to get a divorce sooner than it was announced to the public, but tried to hang in there for the sake of the former couple’s three sons. We’re guessing she just couldn’t take any more of Gavin’s infidelity and finally decided to be happy again. Some reports even say that Rossdale did not initially want the divorce, and isn’t exactly making the process easy for Gwen. Stefani is also experiencing some divorce-related stress from social media, since many people are calling her a homewrecker and accusing her of breaking up current boyfriend Blake Shelton’s marriage. Gwen has also released new music about her divorce—the single is called “Used to Love You,” which indicates that this process has probably been emotional hell for her. 9. Madonna The pop icon has several relationships under her belt (hey, she’s in her 50s), and if you’ve been following Madonna’s career for years, you know that she went through hell during her marriage to Sean Penn. The divorce proceedings weren’t so pretty either, but the two seem to be the best of friends these days. Guy Ritchie, who was also married to Madonna, put her through hard times during the divorce proceedings as well. The couple called it quits in 2008, and since Madonna is considerably wealthier than Ritchie, she was required to pay spousal support–$76 to $92 million. She was required to pay in order to legally end their marriage, and cited “unreasonable behavior” as the reason for their divorce. No wonder she’s not in a hurry to get married again. 8. Britney Spears According to Britney’s ex, dancer Kevin Federline, he didn’t realize that the couple was divorcing until he found out the news during an interview. After being together for a few years, Spears and Federline ended their marriage in 2007, after having two sons together. Britney says that “irreconcilable differences” caused the split, and Kevin alluded to the fact that Britney was abusing substances at the time and not thinking clearly. Perhaps Kevin’s lack of ability to provide for the family was contributing to her stress (he was a backup dancer and pizza delivery boy when they met). In order to settle the divorce, Spears was ordered to pay Federline $40,000 a month, which definitely didn’t make the process any easier. 7. Christina Aguilera What do you do when you’re a celebrity and you can’t get your ex-spouse to move out of the house? You give him an undisclosed amount of money to leave—after you move your new boyfriend in, of course. At least, that’s what Christina Aguilera did. When she and ex-husband Jordan Bratman split in 2011, he technically couldn’t get any of her money, since they signed a prenuptial agreement. So, he decided to protest in his own way. Aguilera finally broke down and gave Bratman an undisclosed amount, just so he could leave her alone. Jordan’s plan was pretty childish, but we can’t deny that it worked. 6. Master P We haven’t heard much from rapper and mogul Master P in a while on the music front, since he’s been busy making business moves. A lot of his time has also been spent going through a nasty divorce with Sonya, his wife of 24 years. Sonya is the one who filed for the divorce, and apparently, the two have been estranged for years. She took him to court to demand child support for the couple’s four younger children, but wasn’t satisfied with the amount the judge ordered. The two have accused each other of being crazy, Master P has alluded to the fact that his ex-wife is a drug addict, and she has continued to harass him about money while she lives in the house he pays for, and reportedly has a boyfriend. Master P has allegedly moved on with his life, found new love, and is striving to have some peace of mind again. 5. Kim Kardashian We all remember back in October of 2011 when Kim Kardashian split from Kris Humphries, her husband of 72 days. While the marriage didn’t last long in the traditional sense, it certainly was a lengthy union legally. Humphries felt duped, refused to divorce Kardashian, and asked for an annulment instead. He didn’t want to grant any of Kim’s requests during the divorce proceedings, and Kardashian’s lawyer even said that Kris was “holding Kim hostage.” In April of 2013, Kris finally decided to divorce Kim, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce came shortly before Kim gave birth to daughter North, with now-husband Kanye West. 4. Denise Richards Our sympathies go out to any woman who has ever been involved with Charlie Sheen, but Denise Richards definitely had a difficult time with him. She was pregnant with the couple’s second child when she filed for divorce in 2005. She cited that Sheen was abusive, addicted to p*rn, and even threatened to kill her. Charlie also told Denise that she was a “sad, jobless pig” who was “talentless” and “a bad mom.” Clearly, that’s no environment to raise children in. Richards had to deal with divorce proceedings while carrying a baby, and no one should have to go through that. To make matters worse, Charlie’s shining personality certainly didn’t help the proceedings to go smoothly. Sheen then moved onto marry Brooke Mueller, and when that marriage started to go south, he and Denise started to get along again. Richards has confirmed that the two are close friends now, and she is even helping to raise Sheen’s twin boys with Mueller. 3. Heidi Klum To their fans, it seemed that Heidi Klum and her musician ex-husband Seal, were madly in love. The two renewed their vows every year during their seven-year union, had four children, and were always being affectionate toward each other in public. When they announced their split in 2012, everyone was shocked. Apparently, Seal didn’t make the process easy for Heidi, and it has been rumored that his temper was a cause for the divorce. Seal even accused Klum of fornicating with “the help,” referring to the family’s bodyguard, Martin Kristen. Martin and Heidi are still together, so Seal kind of had a right to lose his temper. We can certainly see why he may have made the dissolution of his marriage to Heidi more difficult than it had to be. 2. David Gest David Gest was once the husband of the legendary Liza Minnelli, although many people are still confused as to why he chose to marry a woman. Gest and Minnelli’s union was a strange one, and getting a divorce was a hellacious process, according to David. Gest accused Liza of having herpes and knowingly exposing him to the STD without his knowledge. Gest also sued Minnelli on assault charges. Liza counter-sued David for $2 million, claiming that he stole money from her, and saying that she was scared of him because he’d tried to poison her. After years of fighting, the two agreed to a no-fault divorce in 2007, just to get it over with. 1. Pamela Anderson It’s an oldie, but a goodie.
