One of the most incredible cities in the world, there are so many things about Dubai that absolutely blows us away. For instance, if we had the means and time we would happily travel there just to see the world’s tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa. However, most people know about the existence of that building, but there are several other facts about the city that are not talked about nearly as much which we don’t understand at this point. On top of the many amazing facts about Dubai that aren’t talked about nearly enough, it is also amazing just how many misconceptions about the city are commonly believed. In fact, being entirely forthright we have to admit that we were among the group of people that were misinformed about several things about Dubai. Realizing that there are so many fascinating things about the city inspired us to put together this list of 10 misconceptions about Dubai and 10 odd things about it that are surprisingly true. Exemplified by the fact that the tallest structure in the world was built there, the Burj Khalifa is far from the only massive thing that has been created within the city borders. For instance, the tallest hotel in the world, biggest mall, and largest aquarium and second largest manmade marina also all exist in Dubai. 2 You Can Ski There A city that we all know does not exist far from the desert, it may seem safe to assume you will never need a winter jacket in Dubai but not so fast. That is because someone decided to build a resort that is aptly named Ski Dubai in the city. Highlighted by a manmade mountain that is covered in artificial snow, it has brought the joys of downhill skiing to an area of the world that would otherwise never get to experience it. 3 Some Burj Khalifa Residents Have to Fast Longer A building that we’ve already brought up in this list, you’ll have to forgive us but we think there are endless fascinating facts about the Burj Khalifa. Standing at an astounding 2,722-feet tall, it is so tall that there are 160 floors of residential space. Living that high up has an interesting side effect if you choose to fast. A practice that involves abstaining from eating until the sun goes down, people that live on the 150th floor or up experience sundown later and must wait longer to break their fast. 4 Police Drive in Style and Speed An area that is well-known to have an incredible amount of sports cars, if you are charged with policing drivers with insanely fast vehicles you can’t rely on everyday police cruisers. That said, the idea that there are Dubai cops that drive cars like the Aston Martin One, Bentley Continental, and BMW i8 while on duty blows us away. Still, they are somehow dwarfed by the cop’s Bugatti Veyron, a vehicle that can hit 250 miles/hour in the right situation. 5 There are lots of Cranes Already a city with one heck of a skyline, the builders of Dubai are far from finished and there seems to be new buildings going up all of the time. With that much work going on, we feel very confident saying that any construction business in the area that is good at its job is bound to be able to take on as much work as they like. The best possible indication of that, at various times as much as 20% of the world’s cranes were located in Dubai. 6 Their Vending Machines Are Very Different As many people can attest, in the west vending machines usually sell things like snacks, treats, and drinks. That is why it is so incredible to learn about what vending machines sell in Dubai, a city of great wealth. For instance, if you want some high-end makeup, they have vending machines for that. If you are in need of a last-minute gift or tech like laptops, tablets, and the like, there are vending machines for them too. Most amazingly though, if you want a gold bar, for some reason they even have a vending machine for that. 7 PDA can get you in trouble More permissive as time goes on, you can now do many things in Dubai that would have landed you in deep trouble previously. However, you should definitely not take that to mean that they are free to do many of things that are incredibly common in North America, Europe, and many other regions of the world. Still on high alert when it comes to things that are seen as indecent, if you are caught kissing someone in public or cheating on your spouse, it can land you in prison. 8 Men Outnumber Women by a Huge Margin Something that makes no sense at all when you first learn about it, in the city of Dubai saying there are far more men than women seems like a huge understatement. However, once it is explained that a large percent of the population is made up of foreign workers that are single working-age men, it becomes a lot less confusing. Still, the fact that in 2014, the statistics said that more than $75 of the city’s population was male is simply mind blowing. 9 Robots Race Camels One of the most popular sports in all of the United Arab Emirates, in places like Dubai camel racing has been making a pretty big comeback in recent years. In fact, winning camels can fetch figures as high as $2 two million for their owners depending on the race in question. As a result, training these animals can be of the utmost importance. That is why they’ve created small robots that weigh less than 4 kilograms which also transmit the owner’s voice to the animal, all so they aren’t burdened by the weight of a human’s body on their back. 10 You Can Pay Zero Personal Taxes An idea we’ve heard over and over again throughout our lives, we’re not sure who first said something about death and taxes being the only certainties in life but they were on to something. At least the concept rings true if you live in most places but if you have made your home in Dubai there is a really strong possibility that you live tax free. Of course, like all things related to the government, there are endless rules that dictate who exactly can escape taxation but it is a very sizeable group.
