How expensive can a painting be? I mean, artworks can be millions of pound expensive but this? The world record for the most expensive artwork ever sold has been broken by a 19th century painting by Paul Gauguin which reached $300 million (£197 million) at auction.

‘Nafea faa ipoipo’ (When will you marry?) is an 1892 painting of two Tahitian women by Paul Gauguin after the time he spent on the tropical island in the late 19th century. It’s former owner Rudolf Staechelin, a collector from Basel in Switzerland, has confirmed the sale, telling the New York Times: He told the newspaper: ‘The real question is why only now?
‘It’s mainly because we got a good offer.’
Mr Staechelin declined to reveal the identity of the buyer or confirm the price but there are suggestions the oil-rich government of Qatar purchased it.
If the reports of this sale are accurate, it will have beaten the previous record of $259 million (£170 million) for Paul Cezanne’s 1895 piece, ‘The Card Players’, which was bought by Qatar in 2011.
Both Gauguin and Cezanne were part of the French Post-Impressionist movement with their reputations only being made after their deaths.
