From the outside, it looks all too easy and simple. But for those who attempt to make it in a very competitive industry, modeling is much more than just smiling or pouting in front of a camera. First, every inch of their body must be maintained at a specific weight in order to maintain their status. In fact, super hot actress and model Kate Upton was denied a Victoria’s Secret shoot in a public spat because she was “too fat” for them. And for many men, Upton is their favorite pin-up and screensaver. Modeling can be a brutal business in which women’s weight is closely scrutinized. Then there are the long hours of shooting. The final product may look nice and cozy, but models must pose for hours upon hours to ensure the one perfect photo was taken. The long shoots and limited amount of nourishment they eat leads them to alternative sources of fuel. In particular, they turn to drugs. It’s been said that models use cocaine in the same way athletes use steroids – for performance enhancement. The need to look spry in every shot taken over an eight-hour period leads to models using coke and other drugs to look and appear their best. She first gained popularity in 1993, winning Playmate of the Year. She had been a stripper prior to appearing in Playboy and started dating a wealthy man by the name of J. Howard Marshall. Shortly after appearing in Playboy, she married Marshall. Not coincidentally, her appearance in Playboy coincided with numerous TV and movie appearances beginning in 1994. She landed many modeling gigs, and during the course of her later years, the world was introduced to a heavily medicated Smith live on television. It ended up being a sad end, as everyone had feared, when Smith passed away on February 8, 2007. Her death was ruled a drug overdose. It was revealed Smith used to take massive doses of prescription medication on a regular basis. 8. Naomi Campbell – Cocaine Campbell was one of the most in-demand models of the late 1980s through the 1990s. She was designated a supermodel. She was also known as one of the most volatile models around. Campbell entered drug rehab in 1999 after years of abusing cocaine. She stated she was “having fun. I was living this life of traveling the world and having people just give you anything.” In addition to the drug issues, Campbell has had numerous run-ins with the law with four misdemeanor assault convictions to her rap sheet. 7. Lisa D’Amato – Cocaine, Marijuana, Amphetamines, Mushrooms, Alcohol Former America’s Next Top Model contestant Lisa D’Amato has been a career model, posing for advertisements and photos since the age of 12. She has worked on nearly every runway and appeared in nearly every print catalog out there. The long hours walking runways led D’Amato down some dark paths. She appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky to confess to using in excess: alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine and mushrooms. She was addicted to all of them and Drew called her “an addict in denial.” Despite declining sober living after Drew’s treatment, she did attend meetings and bounced back to win America’s Top Model All-Stars (Cycle 17). The beauty from Phoenix, Arizona was vaulted quickly to supermodel status. She signed multi-million dollar cosmetic deals with Calvin Klein and Elizabeth Arden. She also worked as the face for such giants as Armani, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Valentino, Gucci and Versace. Valletta, now a successful actress, recalls getting high by the age of 10. And while modeling in Europe at age 18, she found cocaine and alcohol. She stated: “I was in a business where drugs and alcohol were widely accepted. They were given to me.” Valletta got sober at age 25 and shifted her career more toward acting where she has enjoyed a great deal of success. 5. Sophie Anderton – Cocaine, Alcohol Anderton has been a reality TV specialist after her successful career as a model. The British beauty has also endured a great deal of issues with both alcohol and drugs. Anderton would use her celebrity to prostitute herself, charging wealthy businessmen $15,000 an hour to help fuel her addictions. During the day she was drinking a bottle of vodka while at night she feasted on cocaine. When the coke would run out, she would sleep with more men to restock her stash. Anderton blames modeling for leading her down this dark path. “I’m not alone in going down this path. Gia Carangi – Cocaine, Heroin, Alcohol The subject of the dramatic film, Gia (1998) which starred Angelina Jolie, Gia Carangi was a fashion model in the late 1970s and early 1980s who dawned numerous covers of huge international magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan. She is one of the first designated “supermodels.” Carangi enjoyed her success and was a regular at the big clubs, like Studio 54 and the Mudd Club. There, she would do cocaine. After cocaine, she graduated to heroin use. She began to lose control and contracted AIDS. She sadly passed away in 1986, the disease consuming her. Jennifer Gimenez – Cocaine Gimenez is a beautiful American model and actress who has distinct Argentinian descent, a place where she grew up. Gimenez was her family’s first and greatest provider of money. The beautiful model started young with her addictions, as is true with many of the models in the business. She had her first alcoholic drink at age 12 and while modeling, got her first taste of blow at age 18. She tried to cut drugs out of her life but the addiction became a crutch. She appeared in the feature film Blow (2001) alongside Johnny Depp. But she had difficulty remaining sober and she too fell under the care of Dr. Drew Pinsky to help her get clean. The slender beauty gained 100 pounds attempting to get sober and weighed 257 pounds at her heaviest. She has since lost that 100 pounds and returned back to her size 6 figure. 2. Jaime King – Heroin, Alcohol King is an American model and actress. Her addiction of choice was heroin. She began using the drug during her first modeling job at the tender age of 14. Her 20-year-old fashion photographer boyfriend, Davide Sorrenti, helped King get hooked on the nasty drug. After Sorrenti died from complications due to his extreme use of heroin, King decided to get sober. She went to rehab at the age of 19 for addictions to both heroin and alcohol. After that, she went on to become a successful actress starring in numerous big budget feature films. King was able to checkmate her addictions and we applaud her for that. She rose to fame during the early 1990s and anchored fashion campaigns for Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Chanel and Rimmel.Moss was considered the “anti-supermodel” during the 1990s, an era in which anti-anything seemed to be in. She was known for her ‘dirty realism’ and sexy ‘grunge.’ Moss regularly outpaced much of the industry with massive earnings throughout the years. H&M, Burberry and Chanel all dropped her as a model due to heroin and cocaine usage.
