The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that the newly-elected chairman of the party will spend three months as their leader.
According to The Nation, the embattled former governor of Borno state, who is being linked with the sponsorship of Boko Haram terrorists, was given a three-month tenure after a meeting of top chieftains and excos of the party on Tuesday in Abuja.
The PDP Governors’ Forum, the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Assembly caucus, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and state caucuses were all present at the meeting where Sheriff’s fate was decided.
After his appointment as the party’s chairman about a week ago, Nigerians and several party chieftains had lashed at PDP for finally digging their own grave.
And in his defence, the party said it made the right choice by appointing the former senator as the new leader following the challenges they had encountered in the past.
But, the meeting held at the Ondo state governor’s lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, confirmed that the party leaders said the decision to allow Sheriff stay for three months was a unanimous one.
Olusegun Mimiko, the Ondo state governor, who spoke with newsmen after the meeting, noted that their decision to stand by Sheriff was taken in the best interest of the party, adding that the former governor had been mandated to prepare for the party’s national convention where new members of the NWC to run the party will be elected.
The acting chairman of the party’s BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin, also announced the concurrence of the BoT with the decision, stating further that Sheriff was given two weeks to produce a timetable for the next convention to be convened in May.
Jibrin expressed optimism in the ability of their new leader to ensure a resolve of the lingering crisis in the party within three months.
Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa states’ governors were all in attendance as well as deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu; Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio; Dr Ahmadu Ali among others.
Meanwhile, Sheriff has blasted those linking him with the resurgence of Boko Haram sect and any other form of terrorism in the north eastern part of the country.
He said no court had linked him with Boko Haram and no one had ever accused him of supporting the group, therefore, he wondered why Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, was smiting his name.
A visible angry Sheriff vowed to deal with Fani-Kayode, saying that this time around he will not go scot-free.
