Entertainers who deserve the Academy’s attention – The Oscars are just around the corner, and while it was once an event that was only uplifting, it is quickly devolving into one that is all about controversy. For something that comes only a few weeks after Valentine’s Day and with all the love some of us have for the entertainers that will be attending the event, we just wish there was more love being thrown around!

Unfortunately, the event is being slammed for its failure to include any strong nominations from non-white entertainers. Now that comedian Chris Rockhas been selected to be the host of the internationally known award ceremony, some critics are still not satisfied.
As an avid movie buff, I have seen a tremendous amount of diversity over the past 10 years in television sitcoms, movies and commercials. Many ethnic actors and actresses have stepped up their game and landed A+ roles in movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Fast and the Furious, The Fantastic Four and Spectre just to name a few.
Aside from the 2016 Oscar Award nominations, there has been buzz amongst Marvel Comic fans. We are starting to see more ethnic entertainers given the opportunity to play characters that were originally Caucasian in certain comic books. An example of this includes the role of Johnny Storm being given toMichael B. Jordan in the 20th Century Fox movie The Fantastic Four last year. This would be a great trend, especially given the popularity of anything superhero related.
Whether you are for or against the current list of nominees for this year’s awards, here are 10 ethnic entertainers, some that should have gotten attention from the Academy this year, and others that we hope will have a tremendous 2016!
10. Will Smith
Will Smith has had an amazing journey from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air days to his success as a director and producer working alongside his wife and son in a few movies. 2015 was definitely his year when he starred as Nicky Spurgeon, the charming, street smart professional con artist in the movie Focus. The film showed him capturing the interest of Margot Robbie’s character Jess Barrett. And despite his age, Smith showed the world he can still walk the red carpet with young starlets. The movie grossed $6.4 million in its opening day, finishing first place at the box office. Will also played a stellar role in Concussion, which covered an incredibly important matter and was deserving of recognition. Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett stated on YouTube she plans to boycott the Oscars, and it is easy to see why.
