9. Bill Gates’ Caribbean Beach Sand
Bill Gates’ $123.54 million Medina, Washington estate is anything but modest. The 66,000-square-foot house took seven years and $63 million to build, so it’s not surprising that it has its own name. Meet Xanadu 2.0.
The house shaped with 500-year-old Douglas fir trees was constructed to reduce heat loss. Built into the environment, you can barely see its wooden façade drowning in the green landscape.
To make use of all that tech genius, Gates equipped his house with an automation system that allows to regulate temperature and lighting in every room. There are hidden speakers underneath wallpaper, $80,000 worth of computer screens displaying paintings and photographs, and an underwater music system in the pool.
Gates’ entire house is one big crowd of outrageous features. But the most eyebrow-raising of all is beach sand hauled from Caribbean to cover the house’s lakefront shore.
