5. Robben Island, South Africa
Robben Island is a small island of the shores of Cape Town. The island served as a prison during South Africa’s apartheid regime. It was in this prison that the former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years (out of a total of 27 years he was imprisoned). The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and except for the historic importance, it is also an important breeding area for a large African Penguin colony
