5. Moulin Rouge
One of the reasons Moulin Rouge was such a massive success was because it not only gave rise to a new movie genre, the pastiche-jukebox segment, but it also paved the way for the comeback of movie and TV musicals. The film tells of the love story between young English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) and cabaret courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). The song numbers were entertaining as they weren’t original compositions; rather, they were whimsical versions of old classics, such as “Lady Marmalade,” “Rhythm of the Night,” and “Like a Virgin.” The movie was unique enough to draw in crowds of both women and men.
