Princess Diana had, over the years, become a celebrity far beyond other members of the royal family when a car accident that occurred in the summer of 1997 took her life. The accepted story is that Diana and companion Dodi Fayed were merely attempting to escape stalking members of the paparazzi when control of the vehicle was lost. Others have speculated that the killing of Diana was no accident, and that she was murdered to prevent her from marrying Fayed. It is known that they were in a relationship that had blossomed when she passed away.
