Here are the 5 Major controversies that shook the Nigerian Senate in February
1 Budget padding: When the budget was returned by President Muhammadu Buhari, there were complaints that the budget was padded. This began when the Health Minister, Professor Isaac Adewole on Monday, February 8 announced that the figures of the original budget of his ministry had been changed and therefore should be discarded. After this revelation, Senator Lanre Tejuosho, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health went into an executive session with the minister to deliberate on the matter.
Also, the Senate committee on education on Monday, February 2, uncovered about N9 billion hidden in the 2016 budget of parastals by the Federal Ministry of Education. The committee queried why the parastals allocation for 2016 increased by almost N10 billion while the entire personnel cost of the ministry and all its subsidiaries including schools and colleges declined sharply in comparison to last year figure.
However, some ministers got into trouble because they went behind the President to approve some ‘spurious’ projects to be included in the controversial 2013 budget after Jonathan had already sent in the proposal to the National Assembly.
Presidency sources confirmed thereby trying to stifle his administration’s efforts to reflate the economy, he ordered detectives to fish out those who orchestrated the padding of the budget for immediate punishment on his return to Abuja. Ministry of education and ministry of health.
However, Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, insisted on Sunday, February 20, that the 2016 budget was not padded as being speculated in some quarters. He said that the total figure voted for all ministries had not exceeded N6.08 trillion which was the official sum proposed by the government.
