Yankari National Park is a large wildlife park located in the South-Eastern part of Bauchi and is undoubtedly Nigeria’s most developed animal reserve and park. It was originally created as a game reserve in 1956, but later designated Nigeria’s biggest national park in 1991. The park has the largest collection of animals than any other park in the country. It is home to about fifty different species of animals and has the largest herd of elephants in West Africa (about 550 elephants).

If you are planning on visiting Yankari National Park, it is best to visit between February and late April. It boasts of attractions like 59 caves, the Wiki Warm Spring which is available for tourists to swim in as well as a mini-museum among many other delights.

Idanre hills is located in the southwest of Nigeria in Idanre town, Ondo state and often referred to as “Oke Idanre” by the natives. The hills are said to be about 800 years old. At the top of the hill, you have a breathtaking view of the town in all its splendor and beauty.

What makes the Idanre Hills even more appealing is the Arun River and if you are the adventurous type, you would surely find the climb an interesting one with the tallest of the hills rising about 300 feet above sea level. While visiting, do endeavour to stop at the Agboogun Footprints, which is widely believed to enlarge or contract to accommodate every foot.

Chad National Basin National Park (Borno-Yobe States):

The Chad Basin National Park is a must visit place for nature lovers and it is located between Borno and Yobe states. It covers a total area of 2,258 sq km and fragmented into three sectors; the Chingurmi-Duguma sector in Borno, while the Bade-Nguru Wetlands and Bulatura sectors are in Yobe.

Lake Chad serves the agricultural and economics needs of the people but offers tourists the chance of boating and visiting the fishing villages in the area. The place also boasts of various species of birds like the Dagona Waterfowl Sanctuary that is internationally significant as a host to migrant birds and has been listed as an IBA (Important Birds Areas) supported by Bird-life International. The park also boasts of rare desert wildlife like giraffe, ostrich, red fronted gazelle, jackals, mongoose, giant tortoise, panta monkeys, porcupine, ratel, spotted hyena among many others.

Old Oyo National Park (Oyo State):

Old Oyo National Park is a great example of eco-tourism being gradually introduced into the area. The park an abundance of wildlife, water recreational activities, facilities for bird watchers and a deep cultural heritage which attracts many visitors.

The people used the rock as a source of refuge and vantage point to monitor their enemy when the Dahomeans waged war against them between 1830 to 1833. The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is one of the last remaining high forests in southern Nigeria and it is located in the outskirts of Osogbo, Osun state. The grove is regarded as the home of Osun, the goddess of fertility. It has interesting spots of little sanctuaries, old shrines and scriptures as well as a trickling river.

Foreign tourists usually come visiting and it is an important symbol of identity for the Yoruba people.

Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort (Ekiti State):

Located in the small town of Ikogosi in Ekiti state, the Ikogosi warm spring is nature’s perfect gift to mankind. What makes this place a great place to visit is the warm and cold springs of Ikogosi that flows in very close proximity to the other and their meeting point serves as an attraction to many people.

The warm spring has a temperature of up to 70oC at the source and 37oC after meeting the cold spring. The meeting point of the warm and cold springs is a unique attraction to tourists. The springs are believed to have healing effects on the body and there is a legend surrounding the springs.

They are believed to be the two wives of a great hunter with one being temperamental and the other quiet.. They had a fight and following a rebuke from their husbands, the temperamental one turned into the warm spring while the quiet one turned into the cold spring.
