4. Kilmainham Gaol, Ireland
Kilmainham Gaol was built in 1796 and was used as a prison until 1924. The prison had no segregation between the prisoners so men, women and children were incarcerated together and up to 5 in cell. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the British, and the place remains one of a national importance. Today, the notorious prison in Dublin is a museum for Irish history, and is considered to be one of Dublin’s best museums. It is also the largest unoccupied prisons in Europe
