A woman weeps as the Lagos State Government demolishes her house and 12 others in the state’s Ajao Estate area.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment houses worth millions of naira were demolished in response to a government order.
The state authorities have blamed the demolition, which began on Friday, on illegal occupation and construction near Lagos’ Murtala International Airport.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Gbolahan Oki, provided several reasons for the demolition while addressing reporters.
Oki stated that the buildings lacked the necessary approvals and were located in restricted areas around the airport, while some were situated near aviation fuel pipelines.
He further added that this situation could result in a potential disaster, such as a fire outbreak from the pipeline, which could lead to the loss of both lives and properties.
The builders were said to have failed to possess the required documents and approvals for constructing in that particular area.
