3. Elton John – Sexual Freedom Advocacy In Egypt Denied
The bespectacled British icon has had his share of headlines. In 2010, the ‘Rocket Man’ hit the headlines when a private show in Egypt was cancelled. The reasoning behind the cancelling of the show was related to Elton having been quoted as saying Jesus was a “super intelligent gay man” in an interview with an American magazine. The head of Egypt’s Musician Union, Mounir al-Wasimi stated the country would not allow “a homosexual who wants to ban religions, claimed the prophet Issa (Jesus) was gay and calls for Middle Eastern countries to allow gays to have sexual freedom” to perform there. Elton had stated “I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East – you’re as good as dead.” The flamboyant performer has been vocal in his derision of how gay people are treated in the Middle Eastern countries and this has been received with contempt by the countries concerned.
