2. James Arness
Actor James Arness passed away at the end of 2011 when he was 88 years old. He was best known for his roles in Gunsmokeand How the West Won. JAmes was one of the most iconic actors in old-time American westerns, and he still lives on today (just turn on TV Land.) Anyway, James died of natural causes, but back in the day he was shot in the leg and knee. You see, James was injured while serving in the United States military. He was just 21 years old when he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. German machine guns fired bullets into his knee and leg, injuries that he would survive and be awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for. This was the pivotal scenario of Operation Shingle, which took place in Anzio, Italy and featured James leading his U.S. 3rd Infantry Division.
