8 Toni Braxton
For those of you who remember Toni Braxton when she was popular, she was a big hit in the 90’s R&B scene. She was a star. She had albums selling like hot cakes and she was gorgeous on top of that. But these later years in her career have not been the best. I guess she was still trying to live like the star she used to be but since her light has been fading since the 2000’s, she was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2010. And she owed a lot of money to a lot of people.
She’s still living somewhat well-off, but she had to sell off a lot of her goods and properties to make life work for her. That’s what happens when you owe between $10 and $50 million respectively to the AT&T, The Four Seasons Hotel, Tiffany & Co, Orkin Pest Control (I’d love to know why), and the IRS.
7 Suge Knight
Suge Knight is probably one of the craziest people out there in the music business. I say out there as if he’s actually still roaming around being crazy and hitting people with his car while driving near a film set (which he did in order to scare the makers of Straight Outta Compton).
In 2006, Knight ended up with only $11 to play with because of a lawsuit regarding a 50% stake in his label Death Row Records. Now it seems, he will pass in jail. And not because of the verdict of the ongoing murder trial either. His health is declining, he has lost all of his money, and while his new home is a very large building, I’m sure his prison cell isn’t a lot like his previous home.
6 Sly Stone
This is a pretty sad story. Sly Stone was the frontman of the band Sly and the Family Stone. He was a very successful musician and probably still could be if it wasn’t for all of the substance abuse and sketchy business practises. What’s crazy about this guy is that he had everything and all he really needed to do was show up and he could still be on top of the world. But he was notorious for not showing up to concerts or leaving them early which had, on more than one occasion, caused the fans to riot.
He tried to sue his former manager in order to get some money to live off of and while he did win the suit to the tune of $5 million, a judge decreed that the money would have to go to another source that Stone owed still. So now he lives in a van. His promoter says by choice, but I’m pretty sure he’s homeless.
