The world’s football governing body, FIFA, have paid a touching tribute to former Super Eagles striker Rashidi Yekini 11 years after his shocking demise in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Since the death of the former Shooting Stars’ strongman, his 37-goal record in the Super Eagles has not been broken by any player as Yekini remains Nigeria’s all-time scorer.
Yekini was one of the best strikers to have come out of Africa considering his brilliant goalscoring sense for clubs and the Super Eagles of Nigeria
According to the video FIFA posted on their Instagram page, they made it clear that Rashidi Yekini will never be forgotten.
”The first player to score a FIFA World Cup goal for the Super Eagles. We’ll never forget Rashidi Yekini’s passionate celebration,” FIFA said.
Rashidi Yekini died on May 4, 2012, in Ibadan days after he was taken to an unknown traditional herbal doctor by his family members who claimed that he was acting ‘insane’.
Yekini’s lawyer, Olanrewaju, also claimed that he was not aware of where the former Super Eagles star was taken to by his family.
He was part of the Super Eagles team that participated in the 1994 World Cup where he netted Nigeria’s first-ever goal in the tournament.
