It’s a medical feat that will give hope to the 15,000 British women unable to carry their own baby because they were either born without a womb or were forced to have it removed because of cancer or to stop life-threatening bleeding during labour.
The two new mums, who both had healthy baby boys delivered by C-section a month early, were given womb transplants in Sweden, along with seven other women.
Allan Pacey from the British Fertility Society told MailOnline: ‘This is a very good success rate for a new surgical procedure. If it carries on like this it may have a massive impact on things like surrogacy.’
Dr Liza Johannesson, of the Sahlgrenska University Hospital said of the ground-breaking procedure: ‘It is also really exciting to have your mother as a donor. It is a very nice gift to give to your daughter.’
Henrik Hagberg, professor of foetal medicine at Kings College London, who was at the first birth, also paid tribute to the grandmothers who had hysterectomies so they could donate their wombs to their daughters. ‘It is an absolutely extraordinary gift,’ he said.
The baby boys join fellow miracle baby Vincent, who was born in September as part of the Gothenburg University project – he was the first in the world to be born from a womb transplant. He was carried in a womb from an unrelated donor.
The ground-breaking procedure, which doctors have likened in importance to the first successful heart transplant, has provided a boost for a similar project in the UK where 60 women are currently awaiting a new womb.
