The Dutch court has issued an order to Jonathan M, a sperm donor suspected of fathering more than 550 children, to stop making any further donations.
This recent fertility scandal has caused a commotion throughout the Netherlands, resulting in a foundation dedicated to safeguarding the rights of donor children and the mother of one of the supposed offspring to take legal action against him.
Despite the Dutch clinical standards stating that a donor must not father more than 25 children within 12 families, the judges discovered that Jonathan had contributed to the creation of roughly 550 to 600 children since he started donating sperm in 2007.
Judge Thera Hesselink pronounced on Friday that the defendant is “forbidden from donating his semen to new potential parents after the announcement of this verdict.”
The court further ordered that he must not advertise his services to potential parents or become a part of any organization that facilitates contact between prospective parents.
If he violates this order, he would be subject to a 100,000-euro ($110,000) fine for every breach, as well as additional penalties.
Eva, the mother of one of the children involved in the case, expressed her appreciation to the court for stopping the man’s prolific sperm donation.
She said in a statement, “Mass donations have spread like wildfire to other countries. I’m asking the donor to respect our interests and to accept the verdict because our children deserve to be left alone”
